Dare to be different
With the carp spawning in many of our waters, it is surely safe to assume spring is here to stay. Looking back at my fishing this past winter, I can confidently say it has been my best season ever. Living in the Free State we often have to move around to many different waters to catch a carp of substance. This past winter I decided to focus my attention on only two waters; one very close to home, and the other the Vaal River, which is...
Tyrin vs. Tzaneen – Part 2
After my practise session at Tzaneen Dam, I realised that the SA Trophy Carp Angling Finals was going to be one to remember. I prepared for the competition soon after and stocked up on hooklinks, hooks, leadcore and most importantly bait. To make sure I had enough feed to last me over the five days of the competition, I bought 20kgs of tigers, maize and hemp seed each.
Location is Key
Fishing heavily pressured suburban waters is never an easy task, especially if not all areas of the lake are fishable from the available bank space. My last session was no exception. Arriving Friday after work, I quickly set up my rods and got on the boat looking for my quarry – they were nowhere to be found to say the least. All the areas I normally fish on the lake were dead quiet; no fish were breaking the surface anywhere.

As always, I was filled with great excitement to this truly majestic location in Limpopo. This province truly got me hooked on big carp angling.
Nightmare Weekend
Who wants to work on their birthday? This is a question I ask myself every year, but inevitably I find myself behind a desk, wishing I had booked some leave, packed my rods and gone fishing. Well, 2015 was going to be the year that I would change all that, and my first step towards my wish coming true was a reservation at my favourite spot along the Breede River for four days.
Session Report: Attention to Detail
Bait and tackle preparation is an important aspect of my approach to any session, especially bait. As per usual, my preparation for this session began a week in advance, and my Tuesday night was dedicated to rolling bait. For this specific session, I decided to test a new variation of my standard, homemade boilies. On the Friday, after work, we set off to our chosen swim on the Vaal River. I hadn’t fished the swim in the past, but...
