Cajun Chicken Sosaties

On Thursday, South Africa will be braaing up a storm on National Braai Day. This is the one chance you have to try a few new tricks and host a braai with a different spin! Impress friends with an effortless starter or make delicious sosaties with a wrapped twist. These two recipes are easy to prepare at home or next to the water.

Banana and bacon wraps in hand

Easy Treat: Banana and bacon wraps with maple syrup

This is super-easy to make and delicious if you enjoy the salty-sweet combination.

Ingredients:

  • Streaky bacon
  • Banana
  • Maple syrup
  • Toothpicks

Method:

Cut the bananas in 3 to 4 pieces and wrap each with a piece of bacon. Secure the bacon with a toothpick or two. Brush the bacon lightly with maple syrup. As soon as your coals are at a manageable temperature, transfer your banana and bacon wraps to the grill. Braai until the bacon is cooked and crisp.

Tip: Replace the maple syrup with honey as an alternative option. You can also enjoy the banana and bacon wraps without maple syrup or honey.

Cajun Chicken Sosaties ready for the braai

Main Dish: Cajun Chicken Sosaties

These Cajun chicken sosaties are full of flavour and can be easily prepped at home before a trip. Simply prepare the marinade, chuck the chicken and marinade in a Ziploc bag and stick it in the freezer. Assemble and braai your sosaties on-site, and enjoy with deliciously fire-toasted wraps.

(Serves 4)

Ingredients:

Marinade:

  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 7,5ml paprika
  • 5ml cayenne pepper
  • 5ml brown sugar
  • 2,5ml salt
  • 2,5ml ground black pepper
  • 2,5ml dried oregano
  • 2,5ml dried basil
  • 2,5ml dried onion flakes
  • 1,25ml dried thyme
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
  • 500g chicken breast fillets, cubed
  • Skewers, soaked in water
  • 1 red pepper, sliced in cubes
  • 1 red onion, sliced in cubes

Sauce:

  • 250ml sour cream
  • 2 Tbsp mint leaves, finely chopped

  • Small tortillas/wraps
  • Fresh coriander
  • Lemon wedges

Method

Mix all the marinade ingredients in a Ziploc bag and add the cubed chicken. Marinade in the fridge for a minimum of 1 hour.

TIP: If you are taking this on your camping trip, you can freeze the Ziploc bag until you are ready to pack your cooler box. Simple thaw on the day you want to prepare the dish.

Assemble your sosaties using the skewers with marinated chicken, red peppers and red onions. Braai the sosaties over medium heat.

While your chicken is cooking away on the grill, you can quickly make the sour cream and mint sauce by combining the two ingredients. Set aside.

Once your chicken sosaties are cooked, remove it from the heat. Toast your wraps slightly for a little crunch. Assemble your wraps with the Cajun chicken sosaties, minty sour cream sauce and coriander with a lemon wedge on the side.
